Shale Oil Mining activities at Mount Airly commenced in the last 1880s and continued until the mid 1920s.
Activity in the area was intense. Supporting Infrastructure for the Shale Mines & the Oil Works included the villages of Airly & Torbane as well as 2 different tramway systems. Many miners chose to live close to the mines in Cave Houses.
Relics from the Airly Mines, the Torbane Oil Works, the Cave Houses & the 2 tramways can still be seen today, making the area well worth visiting.
