Morong Deep

Morong Deep is a deep gorge formed by the Kowmung River. The gorge runs south from Grid Iron Bends down to the Ruby Creek Junction, a distance of some 11km.

Down at river level the gorge has a number of long deep pools with steep granite walls. In other places the river tumbles down through granite boulders and small waterfalls.

There are some spots in Morong Deep where orchids festooon the rocks and trees. In one area I have seen 5 different orchids growing and thriving together.

A trip down Morong Deep is a wonderful multiday summer-time adventure through a beautiful wild area. The easiest trip is in beside Morong Falls and out up Megalith Ridge.

In drier times the Kowmung River is a gentle stream and just right to explore Morong Deep. In wet weather when the Kowmung River flows strongly, Morong Deep is a very dangerous place.
