Undertaker Orchid (Pyrorchis nigricans)

The Undertaker Orchid is a pryrogenic terrestrial beak orchid found in heathland and forest. It is usually only seen after a hot summer fire.

The flowers are a dark red with white stripes. It has a single dark green leaf close to the ground.

The Undertaker Orchid flowers in spring and produces small amounts of sweetly smelling nectar.

Occurs in moist environments in south eastern Australia.

Also known as the Red Fire Orchid or Red Beaks. As it ages the flowers gradually turn black to resemble an undertakers coat.
